Whole-house softeners for hard water, installed and repaired

Water softener installation puts a whole-house, salt-based softener on your main water line. Inside the softener, resin trades sodium for the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Wright Flow Plumbing and Heating installs and repairs them, including the brine tank, the control head and the bypass valve. Where the water carries sand or sediment, we put a sediment pre-filter ahead of the softener.

We are based in Edgewood and work Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around. Water softener repair calls come in with winter storms too, along with frozen pipe repair and slab leaks. Call (505) 306-8285 for a free estimate.

What We Handle

  • Whole-house salt-based water softener installation on city water or a private well
  • Main line cut-in with a bypass valve, with outside faucets left on unsoftened water where possible
  • Sediment pre-filters installed ahead of the softener
  • Drain line to an approved drain, with an air gap where code calls for one
  • Water pressure check with a gauge before the install
  • Control head setup for your hardness, then a full first regeneration
  • Water softener repair for no regeneration, brine tank overfill, worn resin and leaks at the bypass valve
  • Water softener service for homeowners, landlords and property managers

Hard water in Albuquerque and the East Mountains

Albuquerque's water authority says its water runs moderately hard to hard, depending on the source and blend. Hard water leaves white or gray deposits when heated and soap film on skin, a university extension guide says. White particles clogging faucets may be water heater scale, the water authority says, and water heater maintenance flushes it out.

Softeners are sized in grains per gallon. The water authority says to divide a reading in parts per million by 17.1. Under 7 grains, the extension guide says, water will probably not cause major scaling and soap film. Your water provider should have that number.

Much of the East Mountains runs on wells, and the guide advises an independent lab test. Cloudy water can clog the resin with mud and clay, so we set a sediment pre-filter ahead of the softener. Iron that has met air or chlorine also clogs resin, and the guide says to filter it out first.

What a water softener installation involves

One maker's manual names three needs for the spot: the main water line, a drain and an electrical connection. That often means a garage, a utility room or a well house. The manual keeps drain lines under 25 feet and the unit out of extreme heat and cold. If there is no outlet nearby, a licensed electrician adds one.

We check the pressure with a gauge first, since that manual calls for 20 to 120 psi. Then we shut off the water, drain the lines and cut the softener into the main with a bypass valve. Where we can, we tie in after the outside faucets, so hose water stays unsoftened. The drain line gets the air gap most local codes require, per the manual.

Regeneration rinses the resin with brine and sends that water down the drain. We set the control head for your hardness and household, then run a full regeneration. Salt goes in after that first cycle, and we check every fitting for leaks.

Water softener repair: why is my water hard again?

When hard water comes back, that manual's guide lists an open bypass valve and no salt in the brine tank. We also check for a salt bridge, a crust that keeps the salt from reaching the water below. The list goes on to a valve that will not draw brine and worn resin, which gets cleaned or replaced.

If it will not regenerate, the guide points to power, settings, the drive motor or the control board. After a long power outage, that manual's control keeps its settings, but the clock restarts at 8 AM. A wrong clock shifts regeneration out of a low-use hour like 2 AM, and hard water flows while it runs.

Excess water in the brine tank traces to a valve that will not draw brine or the refill flow control. The manual warns that a whole-house filter sharing the softener's drain line can overfill the brine tank. We fix leaks at the bypass valve and the fittings around it, too.

FAQ

Water Softeners Questions, Answered

Common questions about water softeners across Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around Edgewood. If yours is not here, call and ask.

How much does water softener installation cost?
It depends on the softener size your water and household call for, and on the plumbing at the spot. A sediment pre-filter or a long drain run adds to the job. Our guide to water softener installation cost covers market numbers. Call (505) 306-8285 for a free estimate.
Can a water softener go on a septic system?
New Mexico's liquid waste rule, 20.7.3 NMAC, lets softener waste go to a conventional septic system. In new construction with an advanced treatment system, that waste must bypass the advanced unit. A university extension guide adds that regeneration water is an extra load on the drainfield. For a new system, see septic system installation.
Does softened water add sodium?
Yes. A university extension guide says softening adds 7.5 milligrams of sodium per quart for each grain of hardness removed. If you are on a low-sodium diet, ask your doctor before you drink softened water.
Do you install reverse osmosis or salt-free systems?
No. We install and repair salt-based whole-house softeners. Reverse osmosis is a drinking-water system and a salt-free conditioner is a different product, so another company handles those. A softener will not necessarily remove more serious drinking water contamination either, a university extension guide notes.
Can a water softener go in a garage or well house?
Yes, if the space stays above freezing. One maker's manual puts the bottom of its operating range at 40 degrees. It allows outdoor installs only in climates that never freeze. East Mountains cold snaps can reach 20 below, so plan heat for a garage or well house.
What size water softener do I need?
Size follows your hardness and your water use. A university extension guide gives an example of four people using 75 gallons a day each. On 10-grain water, that household uses 3,000 grains of softening a day. We size yours the same way.

Of all the plumbers I called for help, this is the only company that could fit me in same day. David came out within an hour of me calling and fixed the issue. He stayed on it until it was done, and I am so grateful that he was there when I needed help the most. He didn't charge an arm and leg, which was so appreciated in my situation. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
