Water Line Repair and Replacement in Edgewood, NM

Water Lines · Edgewood, NM

Yard line leaks found, dug up and fixed

Water line repair often starts with a wet spot in the yard or a sudden jump in the water bill. Albuquerque's Water Authority calls the pipe from the meter to the house the yard line. Wright Flow Plumbing and Heating repairs and replaces water lines and yard lines. We are based in Edgewood and work Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales and the East Mountains.

We find where the line is leaking, then fix that section or put in a new line. Repiping inside the house is part of our plumbing repair work. A leak inside a wall is a leak detection job.

What are the signs of a water line leak in the yard?

A leaking yard line often shows up as a wet or green patch where nobody waters. A soft spot or a small sinkhole can open over the line. Inside, the pressure may drop and the bill may climb while your use stays the same. Water pouring from the ground is an emergency plumbing call, day or night.

The EPA says to read the meter before and after a two-hour period with no water used. If the reading changes at all, you probably have a leak. The Water Authority's meter guide says the triangle on the dial is a leak detector. It turns when water passes through the meter.

If your meter has AMI, the Water Authority lets you log in and see hour-by-hour water use. It says spikes could point to plumbing problems in the house or yard. If the yard stays dry, the leak may be under the house slab, which is slab leak repair.

Repairing a section or replacing the main water line

A single leak in a sound line gets a section repair. We dig down at the leak, cut out the bad pipe and join in new pipe. New Mexico 811 says to call at least two business days before you dig. The call is free, and it is the law.

Water line replacement makes sense when the line is old galvanized or polybutylene, or when leaks keep coming back. We trench from the meter box or the well house and lay new copper, PEX or poly line. A new shutoff and riser go in where the line comes up into the house.

Frozen or rocky ground slows any dig, so a winter replacement can take longer. A sewer lateral is a different pipe, and our sewer line repair page covers it.

Galvanized service lines in Albuquerque and well lines in the East Mountains

In an October 2024 notice, the Water Authority said its survey had not found any lead service lines in Albuquerque. Its inventory has a category called galvanized requiring replacement, for lines lead pipes may once have affected. You can enter your address on its service line inventory map to see what is known about your line.

When it replaces its side of a lead or galvanized line, it recommends replacing your side as soon as possible. Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, so an old galvanized yard line often loses pressure and leaks.

Many East Mountain homes run on a private well, and we repair and replace the line to the house. The well pump and pressure tank are work for a well contractor. Connecting a well home to Water Authority water means disconnecting the well line from the house. The Water Authority's sheet also calls for a thermal expansion device in the house piping.

FAQ

Water Lines Questions, Answered

Common questions about water lines across Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around Edgewood. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (505) 306-8285

Who is responsible for the water line, me or the Water Authority?
The Water Authority is responsible for the service line up to the meter. Past the meter, the yard line to your house is the property owner's responsibility. If the leak is on the street side of the meter, the Water Authority handles it.
How much does water line repair or replacement cost?
It depends on how long the run is and what the ground is like. Rock, frozen ground, trees and a driveway in the path all add time. We look first and give you a free estimate, so call (505) 306-8285.
Can you fix a yard line that froze and split?
A yard line can freeze where it runs shallow or where it rises into the house, and we repair it. The Water Authority's winter advice is to find your master shutoff valve before a pipe bursts. A shutoff at the house will not stop a leak between the meter and the house. Pipes that froze inside the house are a frozen pipe repair job.
Do I need a permit to repair or replace a water line?
Inside Albuquerque city limits, the City lists installing or altering a water service outside the house as plumbing permit work. Its code exempts repairing a leak when the repair does not rearrange pipes. We tell you which side of that line your job is on and handle the permit paperwork with you. Outside city limits, the permit office depends on where you live.
Will you have to dig up my whole yard?
Usually not. A section repair needs one hole at the leak. A full replacement takes one trench along the line, and we backfill it when the pipe work is done. When the old line runs under a driveway or patio, a new line can often take a path around it.
Can you run a new water line to a casita, shop or addition?
Yes. We tie into the existing line, trench to the new building and bring the line up with a shutoff. Tell us what the building needs, like a bathroom or a hose bib, so we size the line.

Of all the plumbers I called for help, this is the only company that could fit me in same day. David came out within an hour of me calling and fixed the issue. He stayed on it until it was done, and I am so grateful that he was there when I needed help the most. He didn't charge an arm and leg, which was so appreciated in my situation. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
