Leak Detection and Repair in Edgewood, NM

Leak Detection · Edgewood, NM

Find the hidden leak, then fix the right pipe

Water leak detection finds the leak you cannot see, so the repair starts in the right spot. The first sign is often a stained ceiling or a water bill that jumped. Wright Flow Plumbing and Heating is based in Edgewood and works Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales and the East Mountains.

Winter storms bring leaks in the wall, along with frozen pipes and slab leaks. We find and fix hidden leaks in homes, rentals, manufactured homes and small commercial buildings. A leak under the concrete floor is slab leak repair. A leak between the meter and the house is water line repair.

What We Handle

  • Meter checks with every fixture off, using the meter's leak indicator and a two-hour test
  • Main shutoff test to tell a yard line leak from a leak inside the house
  • Toilets, the water heater, hose bibs and the softener checked before any wall is opened
  • Fixtures and branch lines shut down one at a time until the meter stops
  • Pressure testing a closed section of pipe with a gauge
  • Openings in the wall or ceiling only where the evidence points
  • Section repairs, reroutes and repiping for galvanized, polybutylene and copper lines
  • Shutoff valve replacement when an old valve will not close all the way

Signs of a water leak in the wall, ceiling or floor

The EPA says a family of four using more than 12,000 gallons in a winter month could have serious leaks. Your water meter is the other clue. If it moves with every tap off, water is going somewhere. A big leak can also drop the water pressure.

Inside the house, look for drywall that stains, bubbles or feels soft. A warm spot on the floor points to a hot water line under the slab. Some people hear water running in a wall when nothing is on. A musty smell counts too, since the EPA says a moldy smell with no visible source can mean hidden mold.

A wet outside wall after a hard freeze often means a split pipe, which is frozen pipe repair. Even slow leaks add up. The EPA puts the average household's leaks at more than 9,300 gallons a year.

How does water leak detection work?

We start at the water meter with every fixture off. Albuquerque's Water Authority says most meters have an indicator that spins whenever water is running. Then we close the main shutoff. A meter that keeps moving means the leak is between the meter and the house.

When the meter stops, the leak is inside, so we check the usual spots before touching a wall. The Water Authority's leak list starts with toilets, and a running toilet is toilet repair. A dripping faucet is faucet replacement, and we check the water heater and hose bibs too. A softener running in the daytime may have a valve stuck open, which is water softener repair.

Next we shut fixtures and lines down one at a time until the meter stops. A gauge on a closed section of pipe shows whether it holds pressure. Then we open the wall or ceiling where the evidence points. Drain leaks show only when water runs down them, and a broken drain or sewer line is sewer line repair.

Water leak repair in Albuquerque homes

A pinhole in copper, a corroded supply line or a bad fitting usually gets a new section of pipe. A run that is hard to reach can be rerouted through another wall or the attic. When galvanized or polybutylene pipe keeps springing pinholes, it may be time for a repipe, which is plumbing repair work.

Albuquerque's water runs moderately hard to hard, depending on source and blend, the Water Authority says. Hard water leaves scale on valve seats, and a valve that cannot seat will drip. Old shutoff valves often fail to close all the way during testing, and we replace those.

In a manufactured home, the water lines often run under the floor, above the belly wrap. A leak there can soak the insulation and make the belly sag.

FAQ

Leak Detection Questions, Answered

Common questions about leak detection across Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around Edgewood. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (505) 306-8285

How much does leak detection and repair cost?
It depends on how fast the tests narrow the leak down and how much wall has to open. A pipe behind an access panel is a smaller job than one above a finished ceiling. The repair itself, from one fitting to a reroute or a repipe, drives the rest. Call (505) 306-8285 for a free estimate.
How do I check my water meter for a leak?
Shut off every faucet and appliance, and close the water valve to a swamp cooler. The Water Authority notes the cooler switch inside the house only stops the fan. Then check the meter before and after a two-hour period with no water used, as the EPA suggests. If the reading changes at all, you probably have a leak.
Will you have to open my wall to fix the leak?
Most hidden leaks need an opening, but testing first keeps it small and in the right spot. Sometimes the pipe can be reached from a closet, a cabinet or the other side of the wall. Drywall patching is another trade, so plan on a patch after the pipe is fixed.
Do I need a permit to fix a leak in Albuquerque?
Inside city limits, Albuquerque's code exempts repairing leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures from a plumbing permit. The exemption ends when the repair rearranges valves, pipes or fixtures, so a reroute usually needs one. Outside city limits, the rules depend on where you live. We sort out which rules apply and handle the permit paperwork with you.
Our house is on a well in the East Mountains. How do we check for a leak?
Shut off every tap and watch the gauge on the well's pressure tank. If the pressure drops and the pump kicks on, water is going somewhere, such as a running toilet. A leaky check valve at the pump can do the same, and a well company handles that part. If the leak is in the house plumbing, we find it the same way.
Can a leak inside a wall cause mold?
Yes. The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. It adds that mold will most likely come back if the water problem is not fixed. If water is coming through a ceiling, shut the main and call our 24-hour emergency plumbing line.

Of all the plumbers I called for help, this is the only company that could fit me in same day. David came out within an hour of me calling and fixed the issue. He stayed on it until it was done, and I am so grateful that he was there when I needed help the most. He didn't charge an arm and leg, which was so appreciated in my situation. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
