Frozen and Burst Pipe Repair in Edgewood, NM

Frozen Pipes · Edgewood, NM

Find the frozen section, thaw it, fix the split

A faucet that gives only a trickle on a cold morning usually means your pipes froze. Frozen pipe repair means finding the ice, thawing it safely and fixing any pipe that split. Wright Flow Plumbing and Heating does that work, including burst pipe repair. We are based in Edgewood and work Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around.

If a pipe has split, shut off the main water valve, then open a faucet to drain the pipes. Then call (505) 306-8285. We take emergency plumbing calls 24 hours a day, and we will get you scheduled as fast as we can.

What We Handle

  • Finding the frozen section in outside walls, crawl spaces, garages and where the water line enters the house
  • Thawing frozen pipes with steady, gentle heat while a faucet stays open
  • Burst pipe repair: cutting out the split section of copper, PEX or galvanized pipe and joining in new pipe
  • Split hose bibs and the pipe behind them, including frost-free hose bibs that froze with a hose left on
  • Frozen lines in unheated casitas, outbuildings and the run out to a well house
  • Freeze splits inside a wall or ceiling, found where the water shows and repaired
  • A check of the other faucets once the water is back on, since more than one pipe may have frozen
  • Freeze calls for rentals, vacant homes, manufactured homes and small commercial buildings

Your pipes froze. What should you do first?

If you turn on a faucet and get only a trickle, the Red Cross says to suspect a frozen pipe. Keep that faucet open, since running water helps melt the ice. Albuquerque's Water Authority says to learn where your master shutoff valve is before a pipe bursts.

To thaw a pipe you can reach, the Red Cross lists four ways to warm it. Use a heating pad, a hair dryer, hot wet towels or a space heater kept clear of anything that burns. It says never use a blowtorch, a kerosene or propane heater, a charcoal stove or any open flame. Keep the heat on the pipe until full water pressure comes back.

The Red Cross says to call a plumber when you cannot find, reach or thaw the frozen spot. It also says to check every other faucet, because if one pipe freezes, others may freeze too.

Where frozen pipes start in East Mountain and Albuquerque homes

The Red Cross says pipes exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, freeze most often. So do pipes in unheated crawl spaces, attics, garages and kitchen cabinets. Pipes along outside walls with little or no insulation are on the same list. Another likely spot is where the water line comes in through the foundation.

On larger lots we also check unheated casitas, outbuildings and the line out to a well house. Albuquerque's Water Authority says to wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas, including the space beneath a mobile home.

Edgewood sits near 6,700 feet, and East Mountain homes freeze harder than homes in the valley. In the February 2011 cold, Albuquerque's lows ran from 7 degrees down to 7 below zero. A weather station near Moriarty logged 32 below on February 3. Up here, we expect cold snaps that reach 20 below.

Burst pipe repair for copper, PEX and galvanized lines

NWS Albuquerque says the February 2011 outbreak caused millions of dollars in damage across northern and central New Mexico. The damage came from burst water pipes in homes, businesses and public buildings. That is why we check the whole run after a thaw.

When a frozen pipe splits, we open up where the water shows and cut out the split section. Copper gets new copper, and split PEX gets a new length and new fittings. Old galvanized steel gets cut back to sound pipe. A galvanized house that keeps splitting may need repiping, which is part of our plumbing repair work.

Some freeze damage needs a different repair. A line that split under a concrete slab is a slab leak repair. A yard line that froze between the meter or well house and the home is a water line repair. A slow leak inside a wall with no freeze behind it is a leak detection job.

FAQ

Frozen Pipes Questions, Answered

Common questions about frozen pipes across Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around Edgewood. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (505) 306-8285

How much does frozen pipe repair cost?
It depends on where the pipe froze, how many places split and what it is made of. A split in an open garage wall takes less work than one inside a finished wall or under a floor. Drywall patching afterward is another trade. We look first and give you a free estimate, so call (505) 306-8285.
Why do pipes burst when they freeze?
The Red Cross explains that water expands as it freezes. That puts tremendous pressure on metal and plastic pipes, and the ice can break even a strong one. A split can stay hidden until the ice melts, so watch for leaks as the house warms up.
How do I keep my pipes from freezing?
The Red Cross says to let cold water drip, even at a trickle, from faucets served by exposed pipes. It also says to open cabinet doors under sinks and to hold the thermostat at one temperature day and night. If you leave town or a rental sits empty, keep the heat on and set no lower than 55 degrees. Our guide on how to keep pipes from freezing covers the rest.
Can a frost-free hose bib freeze?
Yes. One maker's install sheet says to close the handle and take the hose off in freezing weather. With a hose on, the hose bib cannot drain, and trapped water may freeze and damage the valve. A split hose bib is a faucet replacement job, and we check the pipe behind it for freeze damage too.
Do I need a permit to fix a burst pipe in Albuquerque?
Inside city limits, Albuquerque's code exempts repairing leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures from a plumbing permit. The exemption ends when the work rearranges pipes, valves or fixtures, like moving a line out of an outside wall. Outside the city, the permit office where you live sets the rules, and we handle any permit paperwork with you.
The heat went out and the pipes froze. Can you fix both?
Yes, plumbing and heating are under one company. NWS Albuquerque says the February 2011 cold left several rural communities in northern New Mexico without gas heat for days. A water heater in a cold garage can freeze, and so can the heating loops of a boiler that quits. We handle that side through water heater repair and boiler repair.

Of all the plumbers I called for help, this is the only company that could fit me in same day. David came out within an hour of me calling and fixed the issue. He stayed on it until it was done, and I am so grateful that he was there when I needed help the most. He didn't charge an arm and leg, which was so appreciated in my situation. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
