Shower Valve Replacement and Repair in Edgewood, NM

Shower Valves · Edgewood, NM

Fix the cartridge or replace the whole valve

A tub spout or shower that drips after you turn it off needs shower valve replacement or repair. So does a handle that spins, sticks or will not shut the water off. Wright Flow Plumbing and Heating does both, based in Edgewood and working Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales and the East Mountains.

We check the valve first and tell you if a cartridge will do or the whole valve must go. Shower valves are one part of our plumbing repair work. A dripping sink faucet or hose bib is a faucet replacement job.

What We Handle

  • Shower cartridge replacement for drips and handles that spin, stick or will not shut off
  • Stem, washer and seat repair on older two- and three-handle tub and shower valves
  • Whole valve replacement when the body is corroded or its parts are no longer made
  • Diverter repair, at the tub spout or the valve, when water will not reach the showerhead
  • Pressure-balance and thermostatic anti-scald valves in place of old multi-handle valves
  • Limit stop adjustment when a shower runs too hot or never gets hot enough
  • Valve access through the trim opening, an access panel or the other side of the wall
  • Tub and shower valves in houses, rentals, manufactured homes and small commercial buildings

Shower valve repair for drips, stuck handles and diverters

A leaky shower faucet that keeps dripping after you shut it off usually has a worn cartridge or stem. Older two- and three-handle valves wear out washers and seats, and single-handle valves wear out cartridges. The EPA says a showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year.

A handle that spins or will not shut the water off often has a stripped or broken stem. A stiff handle can mean a cartridge stuck with scale. If the water will not stop, shut it off at the main and call us. We take emergency plumbing calls 24 hours a day.

When water will not go up to the showerhead, the diverter is worn or stuck. On many tubs the diverter is a gate in the spout, and the fix is a new spout. On a three-handle valve, the middle handle is the diverter, and it takes a new stem or washer.

Should you repair the cartridge or replace the whole shower valve?

Repair makes sense when the valve body is sound. A new cartridge or stem and new seals usually stop the drip and fix a stiff handle. Replace the whole valve when the body is corroded or cracked, or when its parts are no longer made. Most old two- and three-handle valves have no pressure balance, which is another reason to replace one.

Water stains behind a shower can mean the valve is leaking inside the wall. A cartridge comes out through the trim opening once the handle and trim plate are off. A whole new valve needs more room, from an access panel or from the other side of the wall. If tile has to be cut, a tile setter patches it after the valve work.

A new valve usually needs new trim made for it, so it is a good time for a new showerhead. The EPA says standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Showerheads that earn the WaterSense label use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute.

Anti-scald shower valves and Albuquerque's hard water

An anti-scald valve keeps the shower from turning hot without warning. A pressure-balance valve keeps the mix steady when a toilet flush drops the cold water pressure. A thermostatic valve holds the water at the temperature you set.

Most of these valves have a handle limit stop that caps how far the handle turns toward hot. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says older people and children under five suffer most tap water scald injuries and deaths. It says most adults will suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150 degree water for two seconds.

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority says its water runs from moderately hard to hard. Hard water leaves scale, and scale can stiffen a cartridge or stick its balancing part. When an anti-scald valve starts swinging hot and cold, a new cartridge often fixes it.

FAQ

Shower Valves Questions, Answered

Common questions about shower valves across Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Corrales, the East Mountains and about 70 miles around Edgewood. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (505) 306-8285

How much does shower valve replacement cost?
It depends on whether the valve needs a new cartridge or a whole new valve. Reaching the valve matters too, since an access panel is quicker than opening a wall. Old valves with hard-to-find parts take more time, and so does an anti-scald upgrade. We look first and give you a free estimate, so call (505) 306-8285.
Why does my shower swing hot and cold, or never get hot?
A flush drops the cold water pressure, so an old valve with no pressure balance swings hot. An anti-scald valve should hold steady, so a swing there points to a worn or scaled cartridge. A shower that never gets hot may have its limit stop set too low. If no tap in the house has hot water, that is a water heater repair question.
Do I need a permit to replace a shower valve in Albuquerque?
Inside city limits, Albuquerque's code exempts repairing leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures from a plumbing permit. The exemption ends when the work rearranges valves, pipes or fixtures. We tell you which side of that line your job is on, and we handle any permit paperwork with you. Outside city limits, the office that issues permits where you live sets the rules.
Do you fix shower valves in rentals and manufactured homes?
Yes, landlords and property managers are a recurring part of our work, and so are small commercial buildings. Manufactured homes are built to a federal HUD standard. It says shower and tub-shower valves must be pressure-balance, thermostatic or combination mixing valves. Those valves must have handle stops adjustable to a maximum setting of 120 degrees.
Can I replace a shower cartridge myself?
Some people do, if they can match the new cartridge to the valve. Turn the water off at the main first. Old cartridges can seize in the valve body with scale, and forcing one can damage the valve. If it will not come out, or the drip comes back, call us.

Of all the plumbers I called for help, this is the only company that could fit me in same day. David came out within an hour of me calling and fixed the issue. He stayed on it until it was done, and I am so grateful that he was there when I needed help the most. He didn't charge an arm and leg, which was so appreciated in my situation. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
