How Much Does a Boiler Replacement Cost in New Mexico?
A boiler replacement costs about $3,200 to $9,000 installed in one national cost guide. A second guide puts most jobs between $3,000 and $8,500. Both guides put the national average at $6,100.
These are market numbers from published cost guides, not our price list. In New Mexico, the fuel, the venting, the heating loops and the elevation decide where a job lands.
How much does a new boiler cost by fuel and type?
One national cost guide prices the boiler alone at $1,400 to $6,500. Labor and fitting add $1,200 to $3,200. Here is how both guides price the installed job.
| Fuel or boiler type | Installed, one guide | Installed, a second guide |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas | $4,000 to $9,000 | $4,000 to $10,000 |
| Propane | $2,800 to $7,500 | $2,800 to $9,000 |
| Electric | $1,800 to $8,000 | $2,500 to $6,000 |
| Oil | $3,300 to $9,000 | $4,800 to $9,000 |
| Standard (non-condensing) | $2,200 to $7,000 | $2,200 to $7,000 |
| High efficiency (condensing) | $4,000 to $10,000 | $4,000 to $11,000 |
| Combination boiler | $6,000 to $10,000 | $2,600 to $10,000 |
Most homeowners keep the fuel they already have, one guide says, to skip the cost of a conversion. Both guides say oil is most common in the Northeast, so treat it as a note here.
A standard boiler runs 80 to 89 percent efficient and vents through the chimney flue. A condensing boiler rates 90 percent or more. It needs a condensate drain and often an added vent. One guide says a high efficiency boiler saves 10 to 20 percent on energy bills.
A combination boiler heats the house and makes hot water on demand, with no storage tank. One guide says combi units cost more to install, with extra piping and special vents. Our boiler installation and replacement page covers how we size and set up each type. To keep a separate tank instead, see water heater installation.
What goes into the installed price?
One national guide splits a boiler replacement into line items. Several only apply to some jobs.
| Line item | What one national cost guide reports |
|---|---|
| Removing the old boiler | $200 to $500 |
| New boiler unit | $1,400 to $6,500 |
| Installation labor and fitting | $1,200 to $3,200 |
| Condensate drain (high efficiency units) | $200 to $600 |
| Permits | $50 to $250 |
| Load calculation to size the boiler | $200 to $500 |
| New piping for the boiler connection | $450 to $1,800 |
| Chimney liner | $1,500 to $4,000 |
| Propane tank installation | $1,700 to $4,300 |
A second guide puts labor at $1,000 to $3,500 and permits at $50 to $300. It says most contractors include hauling away the old boiler. A swap in the same spot on the same fuel takes 4 to 6 hours in that guide. Moving the boiler or switching fuels can stretch it to 4 days.
A bigger boiler or a new location can mean gas line work. Gas line from the house to the boiler runs $15 to $50 or more per linear foot in one guide. The second guide adds $500 to $2,500 for piping and gas line work on a fuel change. When the line is too small, we size the new gas line and pressure test it.
Where a permit applies, we handle the paperwork with you.
Should you repair or replace an old boiler?
One national guide says to replace a boiler once it is older than 15 years. It puts boiler repairs at $200 to $600. A second guide puts the average repair near $450, against $6,100 for a replacement.
That second guide points to replacement for a boiler over 15 years old. It also points to one that is the wrong size for the house or keeps breaking down. The first guide says boilers last 10 to 20 years, and some cast iron boilers last 30 or more.
Annual service runs $200 to $500 in the second guide. Our boiler repair and service page covers the repairs and yearly service that keep an older boiler running.
What changes the cost of a boiler in New Mexico?
Elevation. Edgewood sits near 6,700 feet. Gas appliances are rated for elevation, and the maker publishes the high altitude adjustment. That adjustment can change which boiler size fits your house.
Size. One guide sizes most homes at 25 to 50 BTUs per square foot. A second guide prices a 40,000 BTU boiler for 1,000 square feet at $4,000 to $6,500. Its 120,000 BTU boiler for 3,000 square feet runs $6,000 to $10,000. Both guides say insulation, windows and climate change the real number. The second one warns that an oversized boiler wastes energy and cycles on and off too fast.
Propane. Propane is common in the East Mountains. One guide puts a propane boiler at $2,800 to $7,500 installed. A natural gas to propane conversion kit runs $150 to $500 in that guide. Renting a propane tank costs $50 to $200 a year.
Radiant floors and baseboard. Some houses heat through loops in the floor slab, and others through baseboard along the walls. The new boiler ties into that system. One guide prices a zoning system at $1,700 to $4,500 and radiators at $250 to $500 each. If the system keeps losing pressure, have the loops checked before you price a new boiler.
Cold snaps. Boilers are among the calls that come in with a storm here. In February 2011, gas service was cut to over 30,000 customers in New Mexico, in areas including Bernalillo and Placitas. Each home had to be relit by hand. One guide says an emergency replacement can add hundreds to the price. It names late spring or early fall as the off-season.
Is there a tax credit or rebate for a new boiler in 2026?
Not a federal credit. One national guide still says high efficiency boilers are often eligible for tax credits. The IRS says the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered improvements made through December 31, 2025. A boiler put in now does not qualify.
A utility rebate may help. One New Mexico gas utility offers rebates on high efficiency replacement boilers for its residential customers. Its 2026 application lists $540 for a boiler with a 95 to 96.9 percent AFUE rating. A boiler at 97 percent or higher lists $625. A combination boiler and water heater lists $1,040 or $1,125. The boiler must be under 225,000 BTU and installed by one of the utility’s participating contractors. The work has to be done between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027, and manufactured homes do not qualify. Read the current terms before you buy.
