A boiler that fires without warming the house usually has a circulation problem. The pump may have failed, a zone valve may be stuck, or air may be trapped in the loop. Baseboards that run hot at one end and cold at the other point at air or a weak pump. We check the pump, the zone valves and the system pressure first.
No heat at all is a different list. The boiler may have lost pressure, tripped a safety, or failed to light. Low pressure often means the system is losing water somewhere, so we go find it. A dead thermostat or a bad control can also stop the call for heat.
Water on the floor is its own call. A relief valve that drips usually traces back to pressure or a tired expansion tank. A wet spot under the unit can be a fitting, a pump seal or the boiler body itself. Most heating repair here ends at one of those parts.
Gas appliance ratings are written for elevations up to 2,000 feet. Above that, the national fuel gas code derates the input about 4 percent for every 1,000 feet. Edgewood sits near 6,700 feet and the Albuquerque valley near 5,300 feet. Many units also need a high altitude orifice or kit from the maker.
So sizing starts with the house itself. Square footage, insulation, windows, the number of zones and the elevation all feed the number. Then we put the estimate in writing before any work starts.
A replacement is more than setting a new unit on the pad. Venting, the gas connection, the expansion tank, the pump and the piping at the boiler often change with it. Some homeowners move to a combination boiler that heats the house and makes the hot water. A separate tank is its own machine, and water heater repair covers those.
Plenty of homes around Albuquerque and the East Mountains heat with hot water instead of forced air. Some run baseboard along the walls. Others have radiant heat in loops buried in a concrete slab. Both sides need the same pump, zone valve and pressure work when they quit.
Houses built in the 1940s and 1950s often had copper or steel tubing poured straight into the slab. Those loops can leak where the concrete cracked or where the metal corroded. A slab leak shows up as pressure the system keeps losing and a warm stripe on a cold floor. When a loop is truly done, a ductless mini split can heat and cool that room instead.
Annual boiler service is worth booking before the first hard freeze. We check pressure, the expansion tank, the relief valve, the pump and the burner. A small problem found in October is a smaller problem than no heat in January.
